TPRS® Articles

LEARN ENGLISH/SPANISH/FRENCH ONLINE! We use the TPRS® method, which uses reading and storytelling to effectively learn Spanish and French in context. This course is geared towards speaking and reading fluency.

Our textbook for the French and Spanish classes is Blaine Ray's Mini-Stories for Look, I Can Talk! We also will be reading Pobre Ana/Pauvre Anne, a short novel by Blaine Ray in some upper level courses. These books are available at www.blaineraytprs.html . The English classes will use other materials that will be included in the course cost.

Classes run for an hour and a half each night they are scheduled. There will also be outside practice expected on Quia.com throughout the week. All classes will be recorded for students to view during the week, but students are encouraged to attend to get the most out of the language learning experience.

Registration for the next round of classes will be April 16-30, 2012. Students must be old enough to read the materials and the text on the screen. Although the majority of the course is input (the student hears the language used in a comprehensible context via computer speakers or a headset), a computer with a microphone will be necessary for parts of the course (levels 2 and up). The schedule of classes and registration can be found on our webinar page. Each class must have a minimum of 5 students registered for it to run (the webinar software can host up to 100 students at the same time, but ideal class size is 10-20). Students must be registered seven days before the first class of that course in order for us to process their registration and send them introductory materials (including login information).

While classes are tailored to the individual needs of the students in that class, the basic schedule is as follows:

  • Introduction of the Night's Language Structures (about 5 minutes)
  • Personalized Practice of the Structures through Questions and Answers (about 20 minutes)
  • Storytelling Using the Structures (about 30 minutes)
  • Writing the Story Together (about 15 minutes)
  • Reading an Alternative Story that Uses the Same Structures (about 20 minutes)

The method used in our classes is called TPRS®, which stands for Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling. It's an easy, no-pressure way of acquiring another language while having fun at the same time. If you remember when you were little and your kindergarten teacher had you all gather on the big rug so she could read you a story, this technique is much like that (except you get to help create the story and star in it!). Through asking lots of questions and using a great deal of repetition of the structures we are focusing on, you'll laugh, you'll listen and you'll quickly begin to understand the story without having to memorize things.

If you are part of a homeschooling co-op, please contact me to work out a special schedule for your members if you prefer to have classes with only your members in them. Remember, if you have more than one person in the same household that wants to join us using the same computer, there is no extra cost for that person. If they use a separate computer, it will require a separate login so you will need to purchase a second registration. The same is true with the Quia exercises. If members of the same household want to use the same account, it is only one registration fee. If they each want a different account, then we'll have to set them each up with accounts (which requires a second registration fee).

The webinar software we use is accessible via both PCs and Macs because it is based on Adobe Flash, which 98% of all computers have installed already (it is a free install if they don't). The classes can be accessed by any computer that has Internet access. For best results, we recommend using a high speed connection. The Quia website can also be accessed from any Internet-capable computer. If you'd like to know more about the webinar software itself, please go to our webinar FAQ page.
